Summer (Free) Transfers
We already know that the club are now putting their feet up now taking a well deserved break from any transfer activity until they start submitting more record breaking bids on 31st August.

However, there are quite a few interesting free transfers available this summer, and when you look at the list below, it is no surprise that we didn't make any transfers in January considering half of the players we have been linked with are available for free.

The problem is, by signing no-one, the chance of us slipping down the table is high and as such we will be a less attractive proposition for any of these potential free transfers.

Contract data from transfermarket.com

Incoming:

Sam Johnstone (West Brom)
28 year old Goalkeeper thar we seem to be keen on. It will be interesting to see if we push for this one or look at signing Areola on a permanant deal from PSG (I think there is an option to buy?). Areola seems decent enough without really getting a run in the team to prove himself but if Sam Johnstone is just as good then it might make sense to save some cash and go for the English keeper?

James Tarkowski (Burnley)
No secret that we have been after him sinc he knocked us back in the summer of 2020. It will be 2 years on this summer but now doubt we will be interested in getting him in for free after failing to sign him for £25-30m?

Jess Lingard (Man Utd)
I wouldn't blame him, at 29 years old, for wanting to secure a final big pay day if Newcastle are genuinely interested (and stay up). But if not we have to be first choice? Obviously he would be a good addition to the squad and would give us more forward options that we desperately require - especially with Yarmalenko on his way.

Christian Eriksen (Brentford)
Signed with Brentford until the end of the season which could be a good thing for us. If he shows glimpses of the talent that he has showed previously in his career then he would be available in the summer. However, if he plays too well, he'll probably be able get a better deal elsewhere.

Andrea Belotti (Torino)
Another one we've been linked with in the past, personally I think he would be one to really push for. A strong, hard-working striker who scores goals, he's fit right in with Moyes ethos and has the right attributes to do well in the Premier League. Sadly, his kind of player will attract attention from the big clubs in Italy and probably some bigger clubs in England too. Would be a good fit but like to have better options.

Divock Origi (Liverpool)
Liverpool have just signed another forward player so his days at the club must be numbered and he'll struggle to make the bench now. Surely he would love to move from a club where he is competing with 6-7 players for a place to a club where he is competing with a 31 year old injury prone striker? I would not see Origi as back-up for Antonio, I would see him coming in at very least level with Antonio and a good chance to claim that no.9 spot.

Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)
For me, we need 2 strikers and this might be a good 3rd choice option for us. He's scored a few goals but never really had a run in the team at Arsenal or on loan at Leeds. Could be a good option to come in with a more experienced striker to give us another option.

Ben Brereton Diaz (Blackburn)
Another one we were linked with in a multi-million pound deal that I didn't realise was available for free in the summer. Again makes sense why we did not reach the asking price and chances are we will be one of the clubs in discussion over a summer move. For a free transfer, it looks like it would be a good deal.

Other notable defenders available:
Rudiger (Chelsea)
Christensen (Chelsea)
Ginter (B.Munchegladbach)
Romagnoli (AC Milan)
Denayer (Lyon)
Mbemba (Porto)
De Sciglio (Juventus)
Saiss (Wolves)
Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Other notable midfielders available:
Kessié (AC Milan)
Kamara (Marseille)
Perisic (Inter)
Isco (Real Madrid)

Other notable forwards available:
Dembele (Barcelona)
Di Maria (Real Madrid)
Dybala (Juventus)
Lacazette (Arsenal)
Kramaric (TSG Hoffenheim)
Brahimi (Al-Rayyan SC)
Bale (Real Madrid)
Danilo (Ajax)

West Ham players out of contract in the summer:

Lukasz Fabianski
Not sure if he has signed a 1 year extension or not but this season I think he's actually improve on last season. Looks solid for us in goal so is going to be hard to replace if he does leave. I would have expected Areola to get more game time if they were happy to let Fab leave at the end of the season.

David Martin
He seems content not playing at the moment, so maybe he looking at a career in coaching rather than playing? Not sure we will see him remain as a player next season as time is running out for the 36 year old.

Ryan Fredericks
Doesn't appear to have done enough to earn a new contract. He was probably on a decent wage considering he was a free transfer when we signed him so I expect we'll free up some wages and let him go.

Ben Johnson
Can be shaky but overall has showed that he is a decent squad player who still has potential so hopefully we offer him a deal to stay at the club.

Angelo Ogbonna
Currently injured. But has put in some age-defying perfomance for us so expect him to sign an extention when he returns from injury.

Mark Noble
Has stated that this is his last playing season. Hasn't played much this season and pretty sure he will stick around in some capacity.

Andrei Yarmalenko
Thank fuck his contract is finally coming to an end. Showed some glimpses of what he can do with his left foot but otherwise has been a huge waste of money.

Fabianski is better than Areola, I agree!

Nothing controversial about it either.

Article from last Nov.

Angelo Ogbonna’s contract will be extended by West Ham United for another year if he is ruled out for the season by his anterior cruciate ligament injury, The Athletic understands.

West Ham announced on Tuesday that the defender had had a scan on his right knee which revealed an ACL injury.

Ogbonna’s contract expires at the end of the season but West Ham are understood to hold an option to extend it by a year. It is understood that they will exercise this in the event of a lengthy injury to aid his recovery.

The West Ham defender started Sunday’s 3-2 win against Liverpool but had to be replaced by Craig Dawson in the 22nd minute of the match after picking up an injury.

Ogbonna has been a dependable player since joining from Juventus in 2015. He has scored 13 goals in 202 cup and league appearances and finished runner-up for the Hammer of the Year award in 2020.

You think Fab is better than Areola?

Wow

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
Areola didn't have a great game, but it was probably the worst he's had since joining.

Pretty sure Fabianski, who I regard as the better keeper, has occasionally dipped below his own high standards as well.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
Not at all sure Areola did himself any favours yesterday so can see Johnstone, Lingard and Tarkowski all being looked at seriously. Also Kamara but I can't see Beloti coming to us. Would seriously look at Johnson from Forest, the lad from Hull, neither of whom should cost fortunes and would help reduce the age of the squad. Therefore apart from signing on fees for the free transfers big money should be targeted at striker and left back (any of Leicesters would do me - they seem to have a factory).

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
To be honest all free transfers will be looking for big signing on fees and salaries. Agents pay day. In some cases these players have run their contracts down on purpose for greed.
In terms of our players, it's not just the players on frees to consider but those who will be entering their final year. We might want to tie those up sooner rather than later.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
I think Tarkowski will go to Leicester. They’ve been linked as much as us and thought it was public knowledge he’d rather stay as far up north as possible. Spurs get 4th they’ll get Lingard I reckon

With Noble retiring, Kral almost definitely going back and incredibly high chance that Rice will be sold - a midfielder or 2 is a high on that list as a striker or CB.

Kessie will go to a Manchester club or Spurs. Non starter for us.

Belotti will stay in Italy.

On that list Tarwoski will come as he is wanted here - only a big bid from Newcastle prevents that but I think once they have survival they will set their heights higher.

Maybe if we've already secured a striker and a defender - not sure I'd spent much time looking for a midfielder until we've secured signings in the obvious areas.

zico - agree, it's a long shot. I expect he will have his choice of Inter, AC Milan and Juventus domstically and champions league clubs in Germany, Spain and England before West Ham will be considered.

From the other day -

"Newcastle have failed with an attempt to sign Torino striker Andrea Belotti, who reportedly wants to wait for a dream move elsewhere to open up."

Personally I think he would be a great signing but doubt East London is his "dream" move!

The OP's "notable" list is a list of decent players BUT

not a chance we sign a single one from that list!

Yep, no chance, hence I didn't waste my time with any narrative around those players. Just an interesting list.

That was Claret and Hugh who posted that. It was then pointed out to him that the article on the O/S said there was an option to buy. The drunk Hugh then said he would check again but that his info came from a 'top source.'

Will be interesting to see if Areola keeps his place in the side for the next league game. He didn't do anything wrong against Man Utd, but if Fab comes straight back in you'd have to think we probably have no intention of keeping him.

Of course, one very big factor in all of this is whether or not Rice goes. There will be a lot of money in the pot if he does.

Moyes will get about a 1/3 of any sale money

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
There were a couple of reports yesterday saying we have no option to buy Areola and that was all bolloxs.
